Starting after a failed start

I've noticed that if the car fails to start on the first time that subsequent tries to start take a LOONG time. You have to crank it for about 15 seconds before it will start. That's after I might have turned the key a little too fast the first time and it didn't start.
2.4 in a 2LT.
Also been having problems lately where it will stay in 2nd gear beyond the normal shift point. I have to back off the accelerator to get it to upshift. This isn't with hard driving..just normal acceleration.

Yeah, the starting is normal. The last few newer GM cars my family has owned (including my HHR) have all done that. Nothing to worry about!

As for the shifting, that I don't know.... If it seems to be an issue that wont go away, I'd take it into the dealer.

The first problem (with the information supplied) sounds to be fuel pump related, which could also be why the transmission doesn't shift correctly.

I would say you have a transmission or pcm programming issue on the second problem if it's not related to the first problem.

Hmm..that's odd that it would be a problem... Like I said, all of our newer GM cars have done this, even since brand new.....

Thanks for the info. Usually failed start only happens when I bump the start too fast..or if my finger slips off the key, etc. Haven't had a problem with a "normal" length of time holding the key in start position.

I haven't had the shift problem again yet. I'll keep watch.

Holding the key in the start position is not necessary. Once electrical contact is made, the starter will engage until ignition is achieved and automatically disengage. My HHR starts so fast that I barely have time to let go of the key.

Yeah, its kinda freaky the first time you experience it... Just tap the key and it keeps cranking until it starts (but not for an extended time).
