Steering, AC, other problems

Hi guys, I'm new. Yesterday my 2009 HHR with 31,000 miles started having the power steering problem. At the same time the air conditioner stopped working (fan blows, compressor does not kick in). Today i'm having the same problems and also the malfunction dash light is on, the engine coolant info isn't displaying on the information screen, and the remote start does not work. any ideas?

Did you recently jump-start the car using the underhood connections? https://www.chevyhhr.net/forums/problems-service-repairs-42/fuse-blows-when-jumpstarting-660/

If the "malfunction dash light" is the Engine Check Light, you need to get the codes downloaded from the OBDII system - most autoparts stores will do that for free. Get the code and post it here (the actual code, not a description of what it means).
Maybe related, depending on the code downloaded: https://www.chevyhhr.net/forums/problems-service-repairs-42/temp-gauge-c-stoped-working-37675/

thank you. I haven't jump started the car. I went by a parts store and was told their reading showed a bad ac relay and thermostat but I didn't get the code. I'm going to go back and have them give me the code.

FYI: when the thermostat jams open, the engine is slow to warm up, so the DIC will show a digital temp of "----", the analog temp gauge drops to the bottom and it disables the A/C. The related CEL code = P0128, and it likely disables the remote start all at the same time.

You should also check coolant level in the expansion tank to sure it is sufficient.

Thermostat changed and I have air! Thank you. Temp gauge and DIC work too. Remote start still not working, makes a humming sound but doesn't start. Engine light is still on.

Good deal on the thermostat. You can try disconnecting the NEG post on the battery for a few minutes to reset the CEL. If it comes back on, then get the code downloaded and post it here (the code, not the description).

Re: power steering - if it's still a problem, use the search tool at the top of the page, and check out the how-to's on replacing the power steering motor - it's an easy job, or if you are on friendly terms with your dealer, they might cut you some slack on it's replacement, if that is what is needed.
