Steering column noise.

Every now and then I get a rubbing sound when I turn the steering wheel. Sounds like it's coming from the column. Almost like a scraping sound. Had it to the dealer twice and both times they said they couldn't reproduce the sound. Now I'm off warrantee and it just did it again today. Any ideas?

If you've already reported the problem to the dealer while it was still under warranty, it should be reasonably expected that this particular problem be covered by the warranty.

Welcome to GM Products. I had a 2006 malibu that had a clunk (shaft) every time i turned the wheel at low speeds. It started with a wheel issue as you described and was replaced once under warranty. With the same lowsy part that failed again months earlier. That said other than the noise it created no adverse effects and was not a safety issue. Waiting to see if the 2010 HHR does it soon.

My 07 will intermintantly make what sounds like a rubber on rubber squeaking noise when turning it. Has done it on and off since new, no worse now. Since it doesn't clunk or make any of the other noises I see posted, I decided to live with it.

just had mine in the shop for rattling noise in steering column. turned out to be too much play in the steering wheel. they had to replace half of the column..luckily it was still under warranty. now my wheel is really tight..noise gone though
