Steering question

Ok, we're waiting on the steering parts to come in and my power steering now goes out every time I use the car. I usually just muscle it around until I stop/start and do it all over again. My question is: am I going to hurt or put extra wear on anything (besides my biceps) by doing this? It does take quite a bit of force to turn it and I wonder if I'm causing undue wear on something (bushing, steering column, whatever) that will cause problems on down the road. I doubt it was designed to be used this way for very long.

When my EPS motor was on the fritz I would wait till it was safe to do so and then put the clutch in (aka throw it into nuetral) and cycle the key off then back on. This would reset EPS system until the next time it would act up.

Thx, Don. I don't know how far down the steering column 'chain' the motor exists, and don't want to wear out anything that wasn't designed for the punishment.

My trans is an automatic, and it gives me the woolies thinking of putting it in neutral and shutting off the engine temporarily while under way. But yet I wouldn't hesitate to push in a clutch an do the same thing. It's all a mindset thing I suppose.

The motor attaches to the column behind the knee bolster. It just "assists".
