Look at the diagram on it.
#85 and 86 are the two terminals for the pull in coil.
So if you test those two locations where it would plug into, one will be positive and the other ground.
Google how a relay works.

but one leg, #30 is supposed to be hot always
I guess I can probe the fuse block.
The coil leg would only be hot when the relay was supposed to be on.

#30 is a leg for the switched power for on and off.
#85 and 86 make the coil work so #30 can make contact to the other terminal.
Test for for you. What number terminal is that one ?

We don't know which relay we are looking at. The crank relay in position #34 is the one that might be involved. Other things to look at are the park/neutral switch on an auto or the clutch switch on a standard and the ground location on the top of the trans near the oil filter and fuse #5 underhood.

The fuse box might be marked. If all else fails you could test for the always hot slot with a test light or VOM.

Looking at the numbers on the bottom, where the pins are. 30 and 87 are diagonal, as are 85 and 86. So donbrew is correct, it doesn't matter which way they install. I did not expect to see that.

Just tested with the horn relay, works the same with the relay in either position.

I don't see that part number on any relay in any pic of an HHR underhood fuse box.

#34 is the one I was working on. I've included a pic of my box and the relay in question.

there are a few of those relays in your box; try looking at them or swapping.

You might try tightening the bolts on the box.

If you know the recall has not been done and you suspect the switch is your problem, I think you can guess my question.

Look at the pins and numbers on the bottom of the relay. The contact pins and the coil pis are at opposite corners, that being said it shouldn't matter which way you install it.

If you rotate the relay #85 and 86 are still in the same circuit. The coil and switch are non directional..
