Hey all, my newish to me HHR is approaching 150k and as far as I know the timing chain has never been done. I have a buddy that is a mechanic that is going to help me do it, but I am wondering if there is a list floating around of "should do too" type things and also which parts or kit to use? I would like to start ordering things for when he is available, so I am ready to go.

So for example, I believe I read the water pump should be done at the same time? Do I need the water pump tool holder tool if I am doing it all at the same time? ( did already install the tensioner bolt/mod) Anything else?

Also is there is a brand of kit that most people recommend going with that has all the gaskets, chain, etc.?

If there is already a sticky, I could use a hint, I haven't been able to find it.

If you take off the front cover, you do not need the water pump holding tool.
I suggest you change the serpentine belt and tensioner, both have worn and lost tension and the bearing is dried out.
Order the front guide bolt, Dorman or Melling are good

Order a new valve cover gasket set
Order a new front cover gasket and seal

The kit you want depends on the year and engine in your HHR
I also suggest a new thermostat AC Delco 131-158 180 F degrees.
And fresh Dexcool 50/50 mix

 

Thank you, I'll check out that link and video. I have an '06 with the 2.4L. I didn't know if there is a certain aftermarket brand kit that was best, or if I should stick with OEM?

Cloyes, they made the OEM as far as I know and in any case, I’ve used their timing chain kits for 50 years, never had a failure!

 

And a new bolt for the crankshaft pulley is recommended.

 

I did mine with the Cloyes chain kit.
Don't use the Felpro crankshaft seal.
I did and it leaked.
I did use a Felpro timing chain cover gasket.
Order an ACDelco seal.

I have already replaced the front guide bolt with one from zzperformance, so should be good there.

Anything I am missing?

 

Your 2006 HHR 2.4 HAS VVT.
