It is my understanding the Federal laws governing the manufacturing of vehicles and their safety features for the most part are not incumbent upon the owner of the vehicle to keep those same safety features operating correctly. The requirements are the responsibility of the manufactures and by association the manufacture’s representative, such as the dealerships. Don’t expect dealerships to disable or help you disable any of the vehicles safety features. They would be just flat out dumb to do so.

There maybe some law for independent mechanics as well, but as I was reading up on some modifications I wanted to do to window controls all the requirements were directed toward the manufactures, not the owner or user of the vehicle. There was absolutely nothing in the specific law I was looking at that transferred the requirements to the owner or operator of the vehicle.

There are some exceptions by each state, such as each state I believe has some requirement that seat belts will be worn by all occupants and by implication or actual law requires those seat belts to be working. Do not know of anything that requires an owner to keep the airbags operational, however.

My conclusion is if you wish to disable the TPMS you are on your own. I considered doing so when I first got my vehicle, don’t care to state my reasons for wishing to do so, but have since reconsidered. The damm things have actually helped me once or twice.

However, good lawyers in the case of a lawsuit can/will look for anything contributory and could use that against you. I am not one of those afore mentioned souls.

I'm enjoying my winter break from the darned TPMS headache. My snows came from a former member of this thread in Pittsburgh and have performed flawlessly. I believe he got them mounted on steels from Tire Rack. The TPMS is fine. My factory SS TPMS rims love to not work on a regular basis. I've actually gotten to ignoring them now instead of pulling over on the freeway to inspect. I think it is more dangerous to have the stupid things cry wolf all the time than to not have them at all. Does Tire Rack put in a better quality sensor than GM? Probably. Or maybe it's the steel vs. aluminum rim. One thing for certain, the 18" rims constantly change/lose tire pressure with the weather.

Welcome to the site.

Since you're new, here is the link to the online owners manual. You can download it to your desktop for keeping.
