well they back peddled and and will not replace engine or trans
they did replace the front sway bar links and the inner and out tie rods ends.fixed the rattle in headliner and replace the drivers side door panel. They are going to find the problem with the sway in the back.they will not replace the struts because they are not broke all the way .the struts need to be poring out the oil.not just leaking will go tomorrow and fight them over that.

Did they tell you why they were contemplating engine and tranny swap? They must have seen something they didn't like to say they were going to....... a "higher up" may have put the kibosh on it but that doesn't mean there wasn't a problem that needs addressed.

This scenario sounds similar to my car. I have an 08 SS with 35k on the clock. I had the no power assist issue with the breaks at start up, noisy and sagging headliner 'fixed' three times, my sunroof completely replaced over 4 repairs, two shocks replaced, sway bar bushings replaced, some isolator bushings replaced (cant remember exactly right now) the bow tie emblem on the back replaced twice becasue water seeped in and bubbled it all up, an intermediate steering shaft has been replaced (and now my alignment is messed up after getting it back) and now its in the shop to replace the radio as several buttons have stopped working and I am hearing excessive engine noise in the cabin.

My car is a total piece of garbage and I am trying to get GM to pick up the tab on an extended warrenty...

Just my .02 cents, but warranty or not, a new car should not have all these problems, and if they do they should be fixed, not "well we're not sure what the problem is, etc." making you have to make repeated visits to the dealership.

I understand completely, that there are problems and issues and things breakdown, but it seems to me that new cars these days just have so many problems that its really not worth buying a new one anymore.

Out of the close to 20 cars I've owned in my life (most new) its the ones that have been built in the last 10 years that have problems after problems after problems and for some reason, almost always some strange noise that requires half a dozen visits to the dealership and various parts being replaced and still persists.

Like I said, my .02 cents, but if I pay $30K or more for a new car I want peace of mind and not be constantly with no car because my purchase is (maybe) being fixed ... again.

Well, I wasn't around to see, but from what I've heard cars back a while ago (50's, 60's whatnot) used to break down frequently when they were just a few years old. At least that's what my grandpa and dad say.

Like I say, I wasn't there.... I think we're spoiled with how well new cars are now a days, that we forget what it could be like...

Some older cars had problems when they were new, but they were simple machines, easy to locate the trouble and easy to fix. Also the dealers seems to bend over backwards to make things right.

Modern cars are much more complex and there's a lot more that can go wrong, besides many of the parts are being cheaply made that the car is built from..... more disturbing to me is many dealers seem to bend over backwards to get out of fixing things and the factory will back them up on that. Some dealers really want to make things right, but a "regional manager" or other higher up says no, so it comes out of the dealers pocket...... many times they will have to back off and say no as well. Their pockets are only so deep.

It's not right, but a lot of stuff is going this route, not just cars and not just GM

I agree the older cars had issues and new cars are more complex. They have to be as everyone wants 250 Hp but they want 30 MPG too. Then the goverment wants low emissions on top of it.

My family has had many new cars over they years. My Parents and I have had over 25 new cars since 1960 and we seldom have had any great issues. The worst was the 78 Buick with a 301 that lost a cam. Were all perfect now but for the most we have few issues with most.

As for dealer service a lot of it is just the dealer you are working with. I have had very good service with most of my GM dealers. I had one bad Pontiac dealer and one really bad Ford dealer. I took my buisness elsewhere and I no longer had any issues.

My present Chevy dealer has been great doing everything I have needed or more.

Often the warranty is only as good as the dealer you are working with.

Like I posted, in my experience, its the cars I've purchased new in the last 10 years that have had more problems than cars I bought 20 years ago.

I completely agree that cars today are much more complex than ever before, and if a problem is computer related, thats one thing, but alot of the problems I myself have experienced are just simple mechanical failures that shouldn't happen and if they do should be simple to diagnose and fix. The front end clunk is a great example of that, there are several theories of what it may be and there still doesn't seem to a permanent and clear fix for it unless I haven't read what it is.

My Mustang had a creaking in the steering that took 6 visits to the dealership for them to successfully diagnose and fix having 4 simple parts that were broken which should not have broken given the age and mileage on the vehicle.

VW (at least in Europe) are notorious for burnt out light bulbs, I'd change a tail, dash or headlight every other week.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not knocking GM or limiting this to them, this is a general problem. And I do agree that alot of it has to do with cheap parts being used yet vehicle prices increase which is my point ... if one spends that kind of money on a new car, one would expect it not to have to constantly be in the shop for simple breakdowns.

I've had a mixed bag of experiences with the cars of my past. My 72 Vega (nuff said), I had a 76 Nova a great trouble free car, a 78 VW Rabbit deisel (VW issues), a 82 Pontiac 6000 soso issues, 87 Fiero, I still have it, a 92 Suzuki, a great trouble free car, a 99 Buick Regal, a great running car with AC issues, my 06 HHR so far trouble free with ~70k miles.

These were all new cars for me. I had issues with any used car I have bought.
