Weird Fan Problem

Hello,
Great site for us HHR people! Saved me a ton of time already!

I searched and didn't find anything, so here goes.

It was really cold here this morning, south of Richmond, VA, and when I got in the car to go to work; the defrost fan wasn't blowing. Everything looked and sounded normal, clutch was kicking in and out on the compressor but no air coming out the vents; until I kicked it up on high, then it started working! So, I went on to work, fiddling with it the whole time (once the windows thawed out! ). Nothing on any setting but high.
I checked all the fuses, diodes, and do dads at lunch and didn't see anything
weird or out of the way. It still works, but just on the highest setting.
Anyone else had this?

Thanks in advance!

Jimmy F

Sounds like a blown blower resistor, possibly accompanied with a water leak at the cowl.

Hey Chevy Mgr,
Thanks for the reply! Once I searched for the correct terms I found what I needed.

I haven't had a chance to check that butyl patch yet. There has never been a problem with moisture on the floor or on the windows, but I'm definitely going to check.

The car is an 06 1LT with, 93,000 on her. I was, WAS, a route salesman and had a huge territory. She's been a great car with no problems, but don't it figure; I just paid her off!
But, she's done a lot for me; now it's time for me to do a little for her.

I have the same problem. It just started a few days ago. Coincidentally, I had a bunch of snow come in off the sunroof when I opened it and it melted on the passenger side floor. Could that be a culprit??

No, the snow on the floor wouldn't damage the resistor. The moisture comes in through the ventilation system. Do a search on butyl patch and you will see how it usually gets in. A good way to see if moisture is getting in is to take a look at your cabin air filter and see if it is wet or shows signs that it had water on it previously.

These blower motor resistor don't always have to get wet to fail, somtimes they just fail.

Lucky is correct. I just replaced the heater fan resistor last week. No evidence of any water damage anywhere. Probably just old age after 81,000 miles.

I just picked mine up from the dealer. It had a blown reistor and blower motor. They replaced it for $430. Also, I have been having the same squeaking noise as everyone else in the front end. Last time I took it to the dealer, the repaired somehting to do with the steering column. Today they repaired the sway bars for another $200. I bought the extended warranty when I bought the car. The total bill was $650. The warranty covered $450.
