My son at college was driving on freeway lost all drive power still had electrical couldn't get key out. Had towed HELP he is now stranded. HHR 2010 LT

Some more information would be helpful. Anything that happened recently, fender benders, potholes, work that was done, etc. Also how many miles, automatic trans or manual, engine size(2.2 or 2.4).

Has the ignition recall been performed yet? If not, that could be the problem. Another issue these trucklets sometimes have, is the underhood fusebox, which has a top and bottom half, begins to separate. This causes the fuses to become not properly seated.

take a look at the connection of the large red wire to the under hood fuse box, it could be loose or corroded.

Any Check Engine Light?

Was he using the same key he always has?

 

We can list literally a hundred possible causes, but that won't likely help you out unless you have tools and a fair bit of hands-on experience repairing vehicles. Otherwise, it's best to have it looked at by a trusted mechanic.

The suggestions above are a good start if you have the tools and background. Add to the current short list the battery needs to be tested, along with the charging system.
