Problems/Service/RepairsIf you have a problem with your HHR, want a tip on repairing or performing a particular service to you HHR here is the place to post!
Hey there, I made an account just so I could post. I've been a long time reader but I'm running into a problem that has me scratching my head. For the pump: I've replaced the pump two separate times(junkyard pull) and have replaced fuse 39 48 49 and the 10 amp fuse in the passenger footwell. Still can't get fluid to pump out onto the windshield but all wipers work. For powered mirrors I have replaced fuse 21 and the switch on the driver door twice now (junkyard pull) still no luck. Bought the car about a month ago and so far it's been relatively easy to work on but there was an interior fire so I'm not sure if I've had some wires burnt or I'm getting a short somewhere. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Welcome to the site, the future and any possible burnt wires need to be addressed first.
I don't believe any wiring harnesses are burnt seeing as everything else works I've pulled apart the center console, the dash assembly, And I don't see why they would run certain loops of wire under the console or carpets for the systems mentioned above. Doesn't the door run directly through that accordion style hose and directly to fuse block, And would my wipers still work but not the spray mechanism if there was a toasted harness? Neither the spray feature or the power mirrors have work since I bought the car I've almost torn this car completely apart to fix multiple issues but I can't get my head wrapped around these not working I mean I could have pulled bad parts but I just don't see all of them being bad if that makes any sense I appreciate all your help Mr Old Blue
Has the butyl patch under the windshield cowl been fixed?
FUSE 49 under hood is for the washer pump
RELAY under hood 39 is the front washer, RELAY under hood 48 is the rear washer
FUSE 49 should be hot at all times, is it?
Does the rear washer work?
power getting to the pump?
Does water stay in the reservoir? The most common washer problem is when the reservoir freezes the pump cracks. I would not trust a junkyard part.
The mirror switch fails regularly, especially if you don't have a chime for door open, turn signals, key in door open, etc.(that means the driver door speaker has failed due to water intrusion). I would not trust junkyard parts for that.
You might test the pump off the car. I think the way it works is the fluid exits though one port or the other, front or rear, depending on the voltage polarity.
2 relays: one goes to ground the other to +, changes polarity / direction of motor. That is what makes the pump unique to HHR.
The other frequent problem is the tube to the rear gets disconnected somewhere or freezes and cracks; in that case you get no spray on the window but wet spots inside the car, mine squirted the inside of the window.
