Problems/Service/RepairsIf you have a problem with your HHR, want a tip on repairing or performing a particular service to you HHR here is the place to post!
I have a 2009 HHR LT2 2.4L with 139000 miles. A few years ago the driver's side wiper blade stop working. I bought an OEM transmission but when the leaking windshield was replaced they popped the arm back on and it has worked since then. I missed the return window for the transmission so I still had it when again the driver's side wiper stopped working this week. It warmed up a tad today so I went out to do the replacement. Other than the usual dropping things and coming inside to warm up, removing the transmission itself went well. However I didn't realized that the OEM GM part doesn't come with the small linkage that connects the arms of the transmission to the motor. I've read many threads here since this problem seems pretty common and saw LinkX thread on a repair method. But I already have the part so I just decided to install it. I would think there must be a way to remove that short linkage since GM doesn't include it but I haven't figured it out yet. Those of you who have removed and reused it how did you get it to come off? I appreciate any and all help! Thanks!
Looks like a ball that pushes through a rubber gasket. Should just pop out.
There are "special tools" made for the job, Seems to be just a matter of pushing in the right direction without bending or breaking anything.
I would guess a big wide screwdriver, or maybe a set of channelocks to pry it off or the pliers to squeeze the center in. The spreader pliers above would be the right way to do it.
So far I haven't been able to push it out. I thought there might be a trick to it. Maybe I haven't tried the correct angle yet. The wiper linkage separator tool is expensive! I'm wondering if a battery terminal puller might work.
Oldblue the OEM wiper transmission doesn't have that piece installed. If I had bought the Dorman wiper transmission it would have been included but I didn't realize they were different. I am reusing the motor.so I need to get that piece off. It appears that GM doesn't sell that link separately. The OEM wiper motor has it included.
I would probably try supporting the longer piece(maybe slip some pliers between the 2 pieces, outside of the grommet) then place a piece of wood on the ball, and hit it with a hammer.
I tired a rubber mallet before posting with no luck. With the incoming snow and then rain I can't go anywhere so I will keep trying different things. If nothing works I will have to order a new part.
Purchased mine from Amazon and it came with the link installed. Drivers side wiper came apart on mine while driving home from work in the rain (about 45 miles)
