Well, I've now tried my 2.2, 1LT, Auto in both D and I and it still peaked at 107ish in both gears. I did not notice a difference.

Highjack alert:
Someone mentioned 1mpg difference between driving 65 and 75. For the last few days, i've been keeping mine at 65 with the cruise set, approximately 90 miles one way to work and my NIC just couldn't seem to climb over 30.5. Today I drove approximately 350 miles, mostly highway with the cruise set on 75. When I parked it in the driveway this evening I thought I'd check to see how much worse it was and to my surprise the NIC registered 31 even. It actually went up. Now keep in mind, there are quite a few hills on my route. I'm wondering if it's the fact that the engine didn't labor as hard getting up the hills with the added speed. It doesn't make sense to me, but I thought I'd post it anyway.

Tried it again, same place, same time, same bat channel...and with a very calm evening, she flew like a bird. Hit 110mph and had room to go. Had to slow down for the cars ahead of me though......was really smooth.

Mileage

Hi:
OK. I had to try it again....my gas mileage after a fill up. I drove 45 miles to work at 60 mph, cruise set on a 2 lane highway. with hills and even passed a car and had to accelerate to get around. when I got to work, DIC said 31.5 mpg. When I left work and drove home that evening, upon arriving home the DIC said 28.5 mpg... now this averaged all the miles driven since fill up. This part of the trip was on the Interstate at about 72mph with hills here too involving downshifting also and cruise set for a total of about 90 miles. I drive this route all the time. just noticed it seems to get better mileage at lower speeds, i have the 2LT with the 2.4 auto, but, I use regular gas, which is $2.99 a gallon now with premium at $3.19 a gallon. I have 4900 miles on my HHR since I purchased new on the 20th of February. I'm not complaining, because the Astro got at best of 19 mpg on a trip, so I have really saved by buying the HHR, it is a blast to drive, and I guess it is really a neat thing to enjoy and need at the same time. I'll be posting pic's soon, you guys have given me a few neat idea's to do to mine and although subtitle they have really made my ride personnel and an attention getter....The biggest thing I really get mad about though, "OH, Is that a new PT Cruiser?" I've always owned Chevrolet's..... Is a bit frustrating. But when I tell them the setup of the HHR, it's a different story..It does offer more than the PT....I finally drove one the other day(PT), not too impressed..but the salesman was in the car too. Oh one more thing, the DIC stays around 27.5 mpg if left alone for all driving conditions, both Interstate and city driving, with the most being Interstate.

BTW:
I ran into an interesting situation when I tried the speed test again, same place, I hit 110 mph, easing up to it, then it did it, hit 110 and stopped, like it shifted. well I slowed back to speed limit, and tried to set the cruise control.....no cruise... I got off the Interstate, stopped, then drove on the expressway toward home, the cruise has worked fine since........wonder if the computer noted the shutdown and have to go back to 1st gear or a complete stop before the cruise reset. The car felt good at 110 mph too, but alas, I bought this for the gas mileage.... time to be a responsible adult and SLOW DOWN......

Keep in mind that in today's gov't and legal climate, no car will roll off the assembly line where the top speed capability (governed) will exceed the speed rating of the OEM tires. On the HHR, they are "S" (112 mph) for the 16" and "T" (118 mph) for the 17". Not really sure if Chevy has different settings for the different tires.

That said, last week I was travelling on business, mostly I-64 and some I-81. I was looking for an opportunity to let 'er out, but the heavy traffic volume never gave me an open stretch to do it. Also, the VA SP (speed gestapo) were out in force last week.

We can up the speed limiter or remove it if you'd like .

While making a run to Disney on the Turnpike, Dory topped out at 110 in "D". Dropped her in to "I" and made it to 118 before having to slow for traffic. Managed to get a cheap pic w/ cell phone while backing down. Held down the average speed reset button to get more exact reading than speedometer. The pic shows 112!

1st road trip

Took mine out yesterday for its first road trip, St. Louis to Springfield MO, 220+ miles each way on HWY 44.

On the way down I averaged 85-95 mph, got about 23mpg, hit the 110 limit a couple times. didn't want to risk any faster with the wife and child....there will be other chances though!

On the way back had the cruise on 70 and got 29.9mpg.

Mind you this was on a highway that is mostly hills on a windy day. Very impressed by the speed and mileage!

Bought it for gas mileage without considering performane, what an awesome bonus!
