2.0 Timing Chain Problem at 61,000 Miles?
#12
The 94201S kit is for the 2.2 with sprockets and new cam bolts , and a new style oil spigot.
Not required for your 2.0 , the difference is the VVT .
I agree at that mileage , I wouldn’t worry about the water pump or the balance shafts chain ( but whilst your in there!)
The timing cover gasket is reusable , be careful when gently prying up the cover , the crank seal on mine was still good at 62,000 miles but I changed it at 200,000 miles.
I’m pretty sure it’s your front chain guide upper bolt that has failed or the guide cracked , as the chain has been loose enough to skip a tooth , replace it, the guide the tension guide and the tensioner, they all come in the kit I posted earlier.
I jacked up just the right front and secured on a jack stand , that way not to much oil cane out when , I popped the cover of which houses the oil pump.

I should be good; I have a copy of the workshop manual.
Good idea to pull the cover before I order any parts. Regardless, I may just do timing chain and guides anyway unless I see a problem with any of the sprockets since the VVT cam actuator and sprocket are apparently one piece.

[QUOTE=Oldblue;832966]A general idea , have a look at 2.4 Ecotec timing chain videos
Thanks. Never ran across that video during all my searches.
Any reason I should consider replacing the VVT cam phasers/sprockets?

I'm trying to remember what it was like to work on cars before the Internet and car forums like this one. I guess I just always jumped in head first to work on my cars. Cars were obviously much, MUCH easier to work on, too, like the eight screws that secure the valve cover on my 351 Cleveland engine for example--a 1-2 minute job at most.

I’ve worked on various engines over the years , and this little 2.2 of mine has been very easy to work on. Now learning about procedures to repair it has been easy because of the Internet ( this forum in particular) , but a Chilton or a Haynes manual was my go to for information for decades.

Sorry to hear about the timing chain issues. Hope it's an easy fix for you.
But, darn if you aren't making me paranoid. I've got 51k miles on my SS and now I'll be "hearing noises" from mine.
