Oh, I see... Now I understand, and don't blame you. 
I have a K&N drop-in, and when I take it out and clean it, I usually let it dry for a day or two, and run it like that with a OEM-type filter. It's fine, makes more intake noise, but I wouldn't want it long-term, either.

I see that the air filter box cover is missing, apparently the PO liked the sound better!
