So the wife made the trip from the mechanic in flagstaff AZ to Concord CA. They then drove from California back home to Texas and she parks the car in the garage. I drive the car about 1/2 mile to get an inspection sticker done and when I return, I park in the garage backwards and notice an excessive oil leak under the front passenger side of the car. There was no oil leak prior to the inspection sticker trip. I assumed that it was a crankshaft seal, but that area is completely dry. There is oil dripping off the bottom of the turbo charger's intercooler tube. I did not have time to tear into it any further. The picture is from under the turbo, looking up. Any ideas where to start looking?
Yea, hopefully it is just a loose oil line attached on top of the turbo. I read that the banjo fittings can be a source of a leak. I'll need to remove the air filter box to get a closer look, hopefully tomorrow. Thanks
Oil in the turbo does not necessarily condemn the turbo. The PCV system dumps oil vapor into the mouth of the turbo whenever boosting. It is much worse with a worn engine.
With no codes to help with diagnosis, best to start with basics.
Start by pulling the valve cover and inspecting the timing chain. Any slack at all is bad.
If the timing chain is tight, proceed with a compression test. A cylinder leak down test may be needed if compression is less than great.
Post your findings here.
no leakage spotted on top side of turbo. I’m still trying to find location of leak. Oil on bottom of inter cooler tube, but I do not think it is at the connection to turbo. I replaced the timing chain and valve cover gasket last summer. I just removed the tube from the turbo, it was not tight at all. Could this oil be normal from a loose turbo tube?

I would be wondering how that wastegate assembly got all dented up.
There is a braided stainless line from the valve cover that oil vapor travels through, sucked by the turbo. It connects right above that tube. A worn engine, that is boosting a significant portion of it's running time, will dump a lot of oil vapor there. When not boosting, the vapors go through the PCV valve, into the intake manifold, sucked in by cylinder vacuum.
How many miles? Do the compression test. The leak down test is very likely needed also, because the direct injection turbocharged engines get gunk deposits on the intake valves, which also causes poor compression. Need to find out what the issue is.
