If the auto was such a liability to GM that they had to detune it.
Why did they offer the GMTU to all the ss automatics, that would instantly defeat the detune purpose. because that would put the auto at 265 hp 5 more hp than the stock ss manual.

As stated above, it's nailing the gas off the line that puts the most stress on the trans. I seem to remember only the first two gears are detuned. There is a big thread on here started by one of the gm engineers with detailed information on the upgrade. His username was more_tq_more_horsepwr or something similar.
