I like to understand what something does rather than be told this is what we say it does. I would like to know about the additive they use and it's molecular makeup.
Where's that information?

Is this sarcasm, tongue in cheek, or are you a chemist?

I've studied chemistry and worked with it in a few different areas one was in conjunction with engine performance and what takes place in the combustion chamber under various conditions and with various fuel sources such as gas, alcohol, nitro-methane as well as adding more oxygen through injection of various gases such as nitrous. We looked at much more than just chemistry but chemistry was a big part. We monitored combustion temperatures and pressures while monitoring the exhaust gases with and without a catalyst. It was fun stuff to be involved with. It's interesting how a hydrocarbon chain can be changed (enhanced) by the addition of a polymer chain. At any rate, I would like to see the chemistry behind the top tier stuff.

That ZZP front guide is interesting, but expensive, still I would get it next timing chain change and still install the front guide upper bolt replacement bolt.

Have you heard of "the internet"? You can find any information you want on it.

Folks, I need to revisit this thread. You can re-read the thread for the story. In summary, I replaced my camshaft chain at 185K miles, since it was due. I used the Cloyes kit. At 195K miles, I had cold startup rattle. At that time, after pulling the valve cover, I found excess slop in the cam chain and busted plastic guides. I replaced the cam chain with the Cloyes kit and installed the upgraded front guide bolt. The Cloyes kit came with the "upgraded" tensioner. I'm now at 208K miles and have 3-4 seconds of cold startup rattle again. Today, I pulled the valve cover and have slop in the chain again. Ugh! No guides are broken...yet. Perhaps I caught it early this time. Since nothing is broke, my gut tells me the tensioner is the problem. I suspect it is not ratcheting enough to keep the chain tight. Is there a better tensioner out there that I can consider? If I just let it eventually rattle enough until the tensioner clicks to the next increment, it may bust the plastic guides and cause bigger problems.

Did you "pop" the tensioner or trust it to pop itself? You might give it a try, stick a long stick or screwdriver donn to the chain where the tensioner contacts it and give it a sharp whack.
BTW; no such thing as upgraded tensioner, all VVT engines came with the hydraulic type. Only 2.2L 2006-2008 had the "old" type. Turns out the "new" works in non-vvt engines.

Folks, thank you for the comments about "popping" the tensioner. It's definitely not the problem. I would have never gotten 13K miles out of it had I never popped it. I have done this chain quite a few times and am fully aware it needs "popped." I vividly remember popping it last time I did the job.

So now the question remains...why is this tensioner not ratcheting like it is supposed to?
