I assume you still have to gravity drain out the old oil from underneath? What do you guys do with the old oil? Do shops take it for recycling? What is their fee?

Isn't there also a ring seal that needs to go around the filter?

 

Advance, AutoZone, and I'm sure other parts store take the old oil. Free

Some filters come with the new o-ring, some don't. Never heard of an issue with either. I've used both.

 

The new filter comes with an new o-ring, I buy the bosch filter which has worked out great so far. Places like autozone will take your old oil with out any fee. The top load oil filer is very slick.

 

I did not know this - I think I will attempt my own oil change next time. Do you have to drive the SS up on ramps to have enough room to get under for draining?

 

Unless you're a paper doll, yes. Those ramps they sell everywhere probably won't work because of the ground effects. I just use a 6 foot 2x10 and a couple bricks on the passenger side.

As far as the old oil goes, I have a collection of 5 quart jugs of old oil, and a couple times a year the county has a chemical collection weekend, so I take it all back then.

 

man, this would of taken 10 minutes....BUT i didnt have an 1.25" socket...the biggest socket I had was 1" ... So I had to get a pair of channel locks on it and was only able to turn it a 1/4 of the way at a time, so it took a while just to get the filter out. Man, now I know what I didnt get for christmas and what I will be picking up next time I see one! A 1.25" socket

Ok,
I discovered the hard way yesterday afternoon that the ramps I have been using for years will not work with my SS.

*if* you are using ramps - where did you get them?
If I'm going to slide under a car, I definitely want it on ramps.

I even tried using my hydraulic floor jack to lift it up high enough to slide
the ramps under the wheels - but couldn't quite get the required height ;-)

Is it possible to jack the car up with a floor jack and then place jack stands at the approved front locations? If so, where can you safely set up the floor jack?
