I agree with the guys, without error code - too wide a circle of suspects.
As a courtesy to which you ask I can confirm that a dirty or dead catalyst is very likely.
I would have just knocked it out of the pipe and put the "dummy".
Although .. Maybe in the US it is illegal.

FWIW, These cars, especially the SS are to technical to just be able to open the hood a figure out what the problem is. If you plan on keeping the the code reader app sounds like a good idea. Once you get it figured out please let us know others may find it useful.

So you have two lean codes and a faulty O2 sensor 'stuck or biased rich' code AND 3/4 cylinders are supposedly misfiring..... For the lean code check what was suggested above (MAF) as well as the entire intake ductwork/ vacuum hoses. The nature of the codes leads me to believe it is a simple albeit elusive issue.

The air filter could use replacing but I doubt that would cause too much trouble.

Not yet, but after a restart it was still doing the same thing with a jumpy tach and, soot coming out of the tailpipe and running badly. Should I clear them and see what happens? I have to remove the battery to do that since I don't have a OBD reader.

Speaking of battery, how old is it? Disconnect and wait then reconnect. My guess is that you are having issues with the #1 O2 Sensor. If it's reading lean it will be throwing a lot of fuel at it hence the black smoke coming out of the exhaust.
