My opinion Batman, is you experienced a NORMAL function.

Stopped for the train, engine running....other vehicles around? amount of air moving through the radiator? was probably minimal do to time and circumstances. The fans "kicked" in to assist in the cooling process...which is also normal. The temperature you experienced, 217, is absolutely within specifications. If you took it to the dealer, they would probably just send you home (legitimately).

Unless I missed something in your description, don't worry about it.

I agree. My SS runs around 208-214 normally, and that is right mid-range on the temp gauge. It has done this since I got it. If I sit idling, I'm sure it could get even higher.

Mine runs 199 on the hwy, 207 around town. Occasionally I might see 217. Never gave it much thought.

Angry here we go again

I would agree , except that the DIC is always set to coolant temp, It has never reached 210 - Never ! The fan has not kicked on in 2 years, Untill last week.

I live and breath this car, If you ran into me on the streets, 99 % of the time you would see a showroom clean SS. I do my own brakes , oil , ect.
My engine bay looks like it has 5000 miles on it.
I'm not a guy that just drives it. I live it. 44,000 miles in 23 months . I know what the car has done, and the temps that are normal. And i'm not saying these temps are not with in proper limits, But they certainly are higher and more speratic than ever before.

Today i pull in to the garage and the temp starts to rise 205, 207, 210, 212, then the fan kicks on, and it rises to 216. i rev it up a few times while parked in the garage, and as i'm revin it (4000 rpm) the temp starts droping, 214, 212 , 209, 202, 199, stop reving it let it idle, starts going back up.
shut it off and called it a day. again fluids are fine, I dread having to take it in.

What the hells goin on around here. ?

Sounds eerily familiar. If you do bring it in, have them check the turbo coolant by-pass. Same symptoms. Unfortunatly it took 19 days for them to get the part and they deemed my car "unsafe to drive" and would not release the vehicle to me until it was fixed. I was given a rental, but that was at really low miles. Hopefully if it is the culprit it will be covered under the powertrain warranty since it is part of the turbo.

Keep us posted on your findings.

Good luck,

SPPD

Hey Batman,

You really want to scare yourself, run your car hard one night for a few minutes then pull over and open the hood (I did this right after the GM Tune) The first time I saw my header glowing had me a little peekish, since it lights up the firewall pretty good.

temp

last sat was 105 in fresno, ca. going home my temp, actually not mine, the ss's went to 226. was going from low elevation to 1600' at 55-62mph is automatic. took to dealer last yr for 216 temp. they replaced thermostat, said all ok. my other ss I sold to hotrodbob never went over 205. fan does go on, was on when I parked it. does cool down to 210-215 on level part of drive. I may give dealer a call again, for another (it's o'k response)
