The timing was off quite a bit - possibly 2 or 3 teeth. I was surprised as it still idled (with a miss) and ran but at low power.

I thought for sure engine damage after seeing how far off it was, but it runs great now.

Some people who get the code and then the engine won't run must have the timing off even worst.

Thanks for the update. No new timing chain tensioner? Did it seem OK? (Presumably if you didnt replace it you reset it.)

What did the front guide look like? Shattered or just one break, for example? I’ve seen two versions of that guide, one marked Cloyes, that was ordered separately as a Genuine GM part and came packaged as such, and one marked GM and their part number, which came with my Cloyes timing set. Not making this up. The design of the gussetting was slightly different too.

Did you reuse the crank sprocket both times?

I did put in a new tensioner. The old one seemed fine, though.

I reused the crank sprocket both times.

The front guide had broken into 3 or 4 pieces.

I didn't look at the front guide closely to compare it to the old one (or pieces of the old one!).
