Replace cam chain without removing cam phasers?

For those who have replaced the cam chain & tensioners on an SS, can the cam chain be removed without removing the cam phasers/sprockets? Not sure if i should hold off starting the job until I order the torque-to-yield bolts, or if I won't need to remove the cam phasers.

You must remove the phasers, so order the correct bolts. Some timing chain kits come with the cam gears and bolts but are not compatible with the VVT engines 2.4 2006 thru 2011 , 2.0 2008 thru 2010 and the 2.2 2009 thru 2010

https://www.chevyhhr.net/forums/how-...in-kits-60394/

The 2006 thru 2008 2.2 did not have VVT.

As this is about the SS 2.0 have a good read thru that thread

And make sure you set your phasers to stun...

The cam shafts must be timed prior to disassembly. Do not rotate the crankshaft counter clockwise.

You only need to remove one of them. Once again, they are not "torque to yield" they are "Prevailing torque". GM "recommends" not "demands" replacing almost ALL of the engine bolts, and then they go on to say just being very sure the threads on both sides are in perfect condition and clean. Too my knowledge there are no "stretch" bolts on the HHR. Not all "torque + angle" fasteners are "torque to yield", that is just a precise way to measure and reproduce clamping force.

Thanks for the inputs. Fortunately a local dealer happened to have the cam bolts in stock so I was able to pick them up late this afternoon. I guess you know how I'm spending my Labor Day weekend...

I could not get the chain on and off without removing both phasers.

Huh, so the bolts bolts everyone calls TTY not really TTY. I ordered new ones because they were cheap and available, but because the size seems so ample, would have blithely re-used them had I had any trouble sourcing them. THANK YOU, now next time I won’t worry about it.

Price tells a lot. If you replaced every bolt that GM "recommends" you would go broke. Torque to yield is basically the the male equivalent of a squash nut.
