Yes, this is very easy to do, one wire connector, 3 vacuum/pressure lines, and 1 T30 torx screw. But check the connector first to see if it's heat damaged.

This is the solenoid on the turbo itself? It looks like the one on the manifold.

 

Yes this is on the turbo. I linked to the bypass solenoid(manifold) for you in the other thread. You can see the ports are oriented differently.

 

Thanks RJ. I ordered one. I'll post back after I change it with any results. The connector seems to be fine but it's hard to see if the ports are cracked. It's the hardest part to get to. I will permanently relocate it a little farther from the turbo to remove some heat.

I got the solenoid. It certain looks like the one on the turbo. I found a new location for it so I can get it away from the heat. I can't install it until next week but I will report back once I have it in and can take it on a long drive. The issue is intermittent so I can't easily declare victory.

I will add that when it decides to do the low boost it happens cruising. There is a bump and no boost. When it decides to overboost it almost never throws a code. It seems to like to under boost more than overboost.

Terryk, I just found your thread, I had no idea you've been dealing with this off and on for nearly 3 years!! I didn't see any code other than p0234 in your thread, so hopefully this will do it. I hope the underboost is a result of, a reaction to, the overboost code.

 

Yeah, it's really odd. I can get both. When it happens, overboost happens after a cold start. Under boost happens cruising. The waste gate actuator and diaphragm are fine. I've been able to check them when the issue happens with a vacuum pump while idling. The diaphragm holds vacuum and the actuator moves smoothly. Weird, but since those are fine, at least I can rule out the other part that is a bear to reach. I can go from there.

But from reading here and the Cobalt forums, I think the boost solenoid is the problem.
