Balancing of wheels

I stopped by a tire store today, I was thinking of having some work done until he told me the following:I asked him about taking all 4 tires off of Harvey, I wanted to have them re-stripped, that is when he told me that they were going to charge me $20.00 per wheel, because after the wheels had been removed (even if they were replaced in the same spot) that they would need to be re-balanced
I told him that, that sounded a little like political correctness, in other words a bunch of BS. Am I so old that I have missed something in the past 70 years.
Please post you experience.

Well if you're very diligent in marking the tire's location on the rim, and marking the rims so each tire goes back on that specific rim, and you record the number of balance weights used and their locations...then you can put everything back to where it was without re-balancing. But from personal experience working as a "tire buster" back at firestone in college, you're going to be lucky to get everything back in exactly the same location every time so you might pick up an imbalance.

My advice would be to call around to another tire shop, $20 a wheel for balancing is high.

$20 a wheel is the going rate pretty much nowadays for mounting and balancing of tires. Wal-Mart is the cheapest, usually around $50 total or $10 a wheel, but sometimes they don't do such a great job, depends on who is doing the job.

Everything said so far is true, if you meant to say "tire" instead of "wheel". Once you remove the tire from the rim you must rebalance. If you just remove the wheel from the car no balance is needed, or you could not rotate your own tires. Another "unless" you have on-the-car balancing.

Agree, re-balance, I use a local Mom & Pop shop that has the Hunter Road Force Balancer, only charges $10. per tire for my 17's...

wheels

I misspoke, all they are doing is remove the rim and tire from the vehicle. They are not removing the tire from the rim and then remounting it. 5 lug nuts off and 5 lug nut on.

Well then, why re-balance them, sounds like they were trying to feed you a line of BS.

Now I'm confused. You were just taking the rim/tires off the car and putting them back on? Why?????????????

I think he's dealing with a certified BS artiste at the tire shop.
