Let's talk tires.
I have been through a few different brands of tires over the last few years and can share some experiences.
I had a 1995 Taurus SHO that I bought a set of rims for that came with Kuhmo Eckstas mounted on them. The tires were noisy from the very beginning even though they had little use on them. They went when I sold the car.
My wife leased a 2006 Ford Fusion that came new with the same Kuhmo Eckstas on it and the results were the same. I bought a set of cheap Triangle brand tires from China which were slightly better but they did eventually get noisy.
After the lease was up on the Fusion we bought a 2007 Ford Focus that (You guessed it) had the same lousy Kuhmo tires on it. Maybe because it was a little Focus or what I don't know, but these tires were so loud you couldn't think. Bottom line Kuhmo Eckstas= noisy and wear out quickly.
At this point, both the Focus and my wife's 99 Cadillac Eldorado needed tires so I did some research on tires and found very good reviews for the Yokahama Avid Envigor tire. I ordered a set for both cars and have been very pleased with both the quietness, handling and traction these tires provide. We have had a pretty rough Winter here in Northeast Ohio and I neither car has had any kind of an issue getting through the snowy roads
.
This Fall when the Firehawks are used up on the HHR we just bought, I will have to at least consider another set of Firehawks as I am impressed with the way that they have worn so well on the car now with 54,000 miles on them.
Aside from that I would definitly go with another set of the Avid Envigors.

Two weeks ago, I decided it was time for new tires for my LT2. I got 71K miles on the OE Firestone tires. I went to the Tire Rack website and they showed the Continental Extreme Traction DW were the highest rating. However, there was no mileage warranty with them.
I went to Discount Tire and they matched the Tire Rack price. The tires rode very nice and were extremely soft. The sidewalls were really soft causing too much steering to occur because the car drifted all over the road. They also developed flat spots if the car sat for any length of time.
Last week, went back to Discount Tire and turned the tires back in and had them put Michelin Primacy MXV4(V-rating). WOW! From my perspective, the perfect tire for the HHR! And, once again, Discount Tire matched the TireRack.com price and I merely paid the difference between the Continentals and Michelins. I probably sound like a cheerleader for Discount Tire. The Michelins also have a 60K treadlife warranty on them.

After about 1,000 miles, one tire is howling like I have a super swamper. Hopefully, it is the tire. I am not 100% sure yet, but the chances of it being a wheel bearing in a 1000 mile span is slim. Not a happy camper.
I'm pretty well satisfied with the Michelin Hydo Edge tires I put on. They are quiet, more stable, and great on wet surfaces. Only down side, is they are not inexpensive, but they are a 90,000 mile tire.
