I put Firestone Indy 500's on mine, quiet, smooth, and alot better traction than the GTA's.

I have a set of Uniroyal Tiger Paws on mine...and I really like them! They were relatively cheap, but very good. Never had them in the snow or ice, so I can't comment on that..but I would guess they handle ok. Aggressive tread, but not bad enough that they're loud on the road.

The advantage to Firestone is that they are available 7 days a week in case of tire failure (I have had to get new tires on Sunday) and they do lifetime alignments. One of the first things I do after buying a car is to purchase a lifetime alignment from them. However, they are just about the only ones who still offer it, which is why they just raised the price!
I think the OP said he got 40,000 kms. That's like 24,000 miles. Not so good.

I am kinda hoping ours wear out that fast so I have a good excuse to spend the money to get some good tires.

I replaced the factory Firestones on my '06 2LT (17 inch) w/ the Eagle GT & they currently have 6,000 miles on them & still good as new

I've always been partial to Michelin, so when the time came to replace the original Firestones, four Michelin Hydroedge tires went on. Made quite a difference in ride, and on wet roads the difference is very noticable. I always felt the HHR was a bit squirrley on wet roads, but it certainly is not with the Hydroedges on. The only down side is they are fairly expensive, but they are a 90,000 mile tire.
