I have a set of Uniroyal Tiger Paws on mine...and I really like them! They were relatively cheap, but very good. Never had them in the snow or ice, so I can't comment on that..but I would guess they handle ok. Aggressive tread, but not bad enough that they're loud on the road.

I got some really good ones at Firestone, and already had one replaced under road hazard when I hit a bale of hay. They last a LONG time. 40K on OEM tires is actually pretty good. Manufacturers get the tires cheap, and OEM tires always wear out fast - I wonder if those two concepts are related, LOL! The advantage to Firestone is that they are available 7 days a week in case of tire failure (I have had to get new tires on Sunday) and they do lifetime alignments. One of the first things I do after buying a car is to purchase a lifetime alignment from them. However, they are just about the only ones who still offer it, which is why they just raised the price!
I am kinda hoping ours wear out that fast so I have a good excuse to spend the money to get some good tires.

I've always been partial to Michelin, so when the time came to replace the original Firestones, four Michelin Hydroedge tires went on. Made quite a difference in ride, and on wet roads the difference is very noticable. I always felt the HHR was a bit squirrley on wet roads, but it certainly is not with the Hydroedges on. The only down side is they are fairly expensive, but they are a 90,000 mile tire.
