I used to own a 85.5 944. In corners it was welded to the road, great handling. I got 0-60 times under 8 in mine, and I also drove it in autocross with a Porsche club.
I didnt do much street racing, but I did beat a souped up RX7 with the 944. He was on my tail until a curve when I left him behind.
It was not the fastest thing, but I do not believe a properly running and properly driven 944 could be beat by a normal HHR.
