Car has no power and turbo seems to be asleep. P0017 and p0016 keeps coming up. Code says its the timing chain. I bought the timing chain kit from ZZP. The mechanics told me today the chain is ok. Didn't jump a tooth. He says that the valve cover was dirty from bad oil. I've been using AMS oil for 20k miles it could last. But I guess leaves too much gunk. Not sure what it could be?. Any help would be appreciated. 80k miles on this LNF. Thanks guys.
Did these mechanics check the chain for tension? It does not necessarily need to skip a tooth, a stretched or a damaged guide will do it. .
I guess you could be the one in a thousand that has a bad crankshaft or camshaft sensor.
Or excessive crankshaft endplay.
Or the crankshaft reluctor wheel moved itself.
Or both camshaft actuators (phasers) are stuck.
Yes, the chain may look ok, but it could be stretched, the sprockets could be worn , the timing chain tensioner could have a fatigued tension spring. Better off to change it, and tell them to be sure to reuse the OEM crankshaft sprocket, the SS has a different one from the 2.2 or 2.4.
Oh, it could be they just popped off the valve cover and didn’t see the front guide , it could be broken at the upper bolt!

The mechanic shop is going to replace the actuators first. He keeps insisting that the chain is fine. Thank you guys for the help. I will reply what happens.
I doubt it, and the front guide, is it cracked? Broken? Loose bolt up top? You have to open it up to see it, did your mechtake the timing cover off?
P0016 is the give away, it means the timing chain is off a tooth and stretched.
All 2010 SS's have the RPD unit on the dash so, since the OP has a 2010, you can monitor the actuator valves to see if they are working. Just turn the screen selector on the RPD to the "cam phaser" gauge.
If the intake or exhaust actuators are working they will show on the screen. Not working the gauge will not register and be on "0".
(I'll see if I can find a picture )
Working
Intake side not working. On mine it would get a P0010 code.

I bought the car used years ago and the previous owner took that display off the dash. I won't be able to check that way.
No offense but are you sure this is a real 2010 HHR SS ? Reason for asking is that you can't just remove the RPD unit. The car won't run without it plugged in and operating. Well, unless you do a bypass of the system but I haven't heard of anyone doing that on the HHR SS.

I'm sure. The VIN shows up as SS when I go to the dealer to look up parts.
