I'll second George's headscratching, of all the years I've been in the SCCA and all the years I spent running NASCAR Modifieds, we changed the cap at the start of a season and that was that. Well unless your's truly "stuffed" the car, resulting in the need for a new front clip, radiator, etc.

Of course a few went bad, but not very many, and maybe a half dozen times in three plus decades of racing up till now.

 

Put a light smear of grease on the cap threads & seal, you'd be surprised how nice the cap comes off when necessary..

I'm still on the OEM cap, but have replaced my T-Stat with an overpriced OEM one when doing the DexCool flush & fill..

 

I'm going to have to join the ranks of those that find that absolutely difficult to fathom. I've been around cars for over 50 years and never heard of anyone that changed a radiator cap each time they opened one. I'm curious about what else the 'some' you mention might be that anal about in their lives..........

 

One time openers are fanatics no doubt! My Father In Law's mechanic preached this. The heaps he drove had no where the life span of a rad cap!

I did force a cap to fail on my 2008, but it wasn't easy to do. It cost me $2000.
If DexCool overheats it can clog up the pressure release mechanism among other things. It really hates overheating!
