This really seems like a fun project.

I do have a question, however. Please do not feel that I am at all critical of this project by asking this.

The GM race engine handbook claims that a normally aspirated 2.2L engine can make 320HP running E85 with what appears to be minor component upgrades - maybe even less time, effort and cost than have been invested in your project. Why did you choose to take the path that you took, instead of building it 'by the book'?

Again, not critical, just curious.

First of all this is a 2.4. I guess it all depends on what you mean by "by the book". I have no intentions of running E85, if for no other reason than there just aren't enough stations selling it in my area. SI have enough trouble getting good 93 octane. Second what do you mean by minor components? If you mean engine internals, those will all eventually be done, but just doing those would not achieve the numbers I'm looking for. I want to get to 350-375hp. The 2.4 is a different beast than the 2.0 or 2.2, the higher compression changes things a bit.

Right, sometimes everything that I'm thinking doesn't quite make it into my posts :) It just seems to me (in retrospect, anyway) that it might have been easier and more economical to repower with a race built 2.2 and race modified transmission. Maybe not quite as fun as the route you've taken, but perhaps more efficient.

I get that, but have no intention of doing an engine swap. If I was going to go that route the easiest would have been the 2.0. If I ever do a swap though it will be for a V8.

Will a V8 fit in the engine bay of the HHR?

It has been done a few times that I know of. Major job, but still possible. But with enough cash and time, most things are possible.

Not always fun to be a pioneer. I understand that GM is working with SEMA to provide hot rodders in California with engines that will meet emission specs. These engines are available with all the electronics to drop in clean horsepower. Gm might look at turbo and supercharger options for more engines.
