Ticking & Clicking Making Me Crazy!
My 06 was bought used with 32k and change. The dealership I bought it from is the same one my GF works at, so she was able to pull it's trade-in service sheet...in otherwords, what was done to it after they took it on trade, but beofre I bought it.
One KEY part, was they changed the catalytic converter due to customer complaints of constant "ticking".
It doesnt tick now...it only ticks as it cools, which is normal for many cars out there.
The catalytic converter is covered under warranty, and is a common cause for complaint.
lastly, the catalytic converter has a flex tube where it goes up and meets the manifold. This flex tube is prone to cracking, and can cause a nasty ticking sound.
keep in mind, the converter is warrantied, and the warranty on the cat is extended another 50k miles AFTER it is replaced. If during that 50k the converter should go bad again, it is replaced again for FREE, and the replacement gets its own new 50k mi warranty.
this is what I was told...perhaps Chvymgr could shed some light on this?
Hope this helps.

The cat and tubes are part of the federal emmisions warranty. California and other states have different warrantys.
As said above call GM Customer Relations and give them a chance at it. Selling it over a ticking noise is real overkill and you loose.

If it's a heat shield issue, this comes from GM engineering/managment being to cheap to to do it right. Best practices should be to not have anything attached to exhaust pipes and use body side shields....and if you really have to put something on the pipes, then use a softshield, not a hard stamped shield. The engines today have much higher exhaust temps than they use to, so the same materials are just on the edge of the material limit.
If it's a converter issue, then get it replaced....and complain until you do.
Some cool down noise(light ticking) is unavoidable given the current materials and manufacturing methods. You'll hear that on just about any vehicle made today. Loud Ticking that is less frequent is not acceptable.
