Trimming stock air box
Intake air temps will gain or (most often loose) HP with these "hot air intakes" that some love and think that they have more HP based upon "sound".
Science here, not BS. Expect about a 1% gain or loss per 10* of IAT of HP based upon that. No BS allowed unless someone can base it upon creditable dyno runs, which ain't gonna happen here!
The OEM intake is not restrictive! Period!
I've got both data and dynos to prove that, but the myth and lore goes on....

Modded stock air box.
Mine is even less restrictive with 2 inlets and getting better cooler air than 1 flex. tube stuck in the fender with no ram air effect, how much air is getting to the air box? I know I can feel a big change in performance, it is still the stock air box with improvements.
C'mon, jay.... While I admire your quest and the cool looks of your former (hot air = power loss) intake, please leave seat of the pants, aka butt dyno opinions out of this.
Now, let's see..... Stock intake = no restriction, therefore what does less restriction mean??
But, have fun anyway!

My other unit with the Edelbrock 10 inch filter was getting air from the space above the radiator not just hot air from the engine compt. also from the lower section next to the radiatoe as I had cut a section out of the plastic. neither of these would show any HP on a dyno as your not getting colder air sitting on a dyno,
that will go on forever. i`ve seen enough intakes and the HHR intakes are about as straight as they come. the gigantic hunk of plastic is a joke. i`ve trimmed mine and made a "fresh" air intake, calling it cold doesn`t mean anything to me but getting air from fenderwheel don`t make sense. K&n will not dyno every vehicle they make a filter for and for their price i can change a stock filter every year for 4 years, and not have to wait a day for one to dry out after "cleaning" it. try putting an oven thermometer under hood, drive around normally an see what the underhood temps are

That's a good point putting a thermometer under the hood. I've trimmed the stock air-box and added a second inlet to bring in more air, via having two inlets behind the grille. And also have made couple "Hot Rod Style" air cleaners for mine HHR. I've haven't noticed any H/P gains to be honest. The two H/R styles are more for show, because all thier breathing is the "HOT" air around the engine. But just like any other custom/ hot rod all thier getting is more fresh air than a stock air cleaner and it makes your car look cool. Now adding the second air inlet to my stock box and drawing in more unblocked air behind the grille. Mine seems to have to have smoother throttle response and " little " more torque when i really step on it.If you want more "real" horsepower install a turbo / or supercharger. I hope this kind of helps to clear things up, so all this crap can end.
I want to experiment with my stock air box also, if only to make it more user friendly at filter change, or to go all the way to cold air later. But I want a stock box available for dealer visits etc.... Does anyone have the part # for it, or know what I should offer the scrapyard for one? I think that the 2.2L airbox is the same for HHR,Cobalt, & Ion (if so, I should be able to locate one). I'd check my wifes' Cobalt, but she'll be away for another coupla weeks. I just changed the filter, so this can wait awhile.
