Any Engine Compartment Detailing Tips?

What kind of liner is that on the underside of your hood?
Is spray detailer the best to use on the aluminum block? Does it burn and darken? I want to find something to coat it with to keep away the corrosion that grows on aluminum. Ive cleaned other cars with steel wool but it gets worse later... And some dressings attract dirt.
