i checked it and got something like 11 volts. does that seem a lil high for one LED to anyone else. always thought leds were around 3v but just wanted to verify this. i want to use the power from that to power EL wire for the sunroof buttons.

 

I have used many LED's in computer applications. some are true 12v, and others have a built-in resistor.

LEDs for automotive applications are assumed to be operating from a nominal 12 volt source, so there must be input circuitry to limit the current. First, a voltage divider reduces the voltage to the appropriate level (a DC-DC converter or a suitable regulator) and then it is on to limiting the current by adding the right amount of resistance in series with the LED.

An electrical engineer can equivocate endlessly when it comes to semiconductor technology - in the last few years LED usage has expanded enormously. There is a lot to learn about these very useful devices.

 

so could i wire in a 12v vEL wire kit into the power for the led?

 

I would only install LEDs that are specifically designed for automotive applications and follow the instructions on where to source the power.

In the owner's manual for HHR's, GM suggests that all modifications to the electrical system should be avoided. You can be sure that the warranty will be voided if any after-market electrical devices are shown to be responsible for any problems the vehicle might develop.
