It's not a vinyl vs plastic thing. I have a 98 Dodge truck with a plastic dash.It is cracked in about 20 spots and literally falling to pieces. I've got the dash pad on my HHR for protection so it doesn't end up like my truck.
ABS plastic does not like sunlight and the UV rays it produces.
I'll keep my dash pad in place. Plus it does eliminate that dash glare off of the windshield.
