Question Question on painting those gold bow ties

Sorry if this has been asked in the past. I want to paint those ugly gold bow ties. Does the gold need to be scuffed up for the paint to adhere? Must primer be used? Is there a certian type of paint needed for these nasty gold plastic bow ties? Sorry for the silly questions, I am not a painter by trade. Thanks for all your help!
Pics please!

Lot of people have painted and hopefully they'll chime in with some tips.

If you want an easier way, i will be posting a how to in the near future on using vinyl to wrap them. You won't get the gold border like the ones on ebay, and you can do it in any color you can get vinyl in (i got mine for free as scrap from a car decal shop).

I have had mine wrapped since August and they still look good. Just redoing one because i rushed it. Plus it's not permanent, change them whenever you want, don't have to worry about overspray on your car, or taking them off first.

I taped mine off, hit them with a super fine scotch pad, and sprayed them with Rustoleum-Industrial Enamel "Flat Black" paint. Many washings and bugs later and they still look good.

i use "bulldog" paint adhesive whenever i paint plastic. i don't pre sand when i do that and never had a problem.

although i did remove my bowties, i wouldn't ever do it again. I have removed plenty of emblems before, but those were a PITA.

The bowties themselves are actually clear, with the gold applied to the backside/underside of the bowtie.

I've only painted one so far. Although I took it off for painting, you can probably do a pretty nice job with them in place on the car as long as you follow the various prep work suggestions here (and in other threads) and mask the car off well to avoid any overspray.

Good luck!

I did mine yesterday and they look great , I used duplicolor matching paint and clear it cost 12 bucks for both. just be sure that you mask far and wide w/paper. I goy a little overspray that I cleaned up with thinner

I was thinking since the rear bowtie was lose to remove it, strip off the gold \, repaint it and use double sided 3M to reattach it........
