Adding USB power port in dash-top compartment?

I'd like to put a usb power port inside the flip-top dash compartment of my 2008 HHR so that I don't have to have the power cord of my GPS unit hanging down the console all the time.

I hope I can easily run power from behind the radio...? Also, is there enough clearance under the bottom of the compartment anywhere to mount the port?

Thanks in advance for any info!

The tray is held in with a couple of screws and a couple of tabs. Should be easy to eyeball.

Here is a helpful hint: Go to a GM parts online site like GMPartsDirect.com or GMpartsoutlet.net there are quite a few of them, they have blow up wire frame illustrations of almost every bit on GM cars. Very useful for figuring out how to take things apart.

I have gauges wired up into the compartment. Just unscrew it and lift it out, then you can go under the dash and see the light shining through, it's a bit of a stretch but not too hard.
