My stereo plans
My stereo plans
I am new to this forum and just got my hhr 2 weeks ago, but have been excited about them since the first pictures I saw of them towards the end of last year. I just got in my first parts for it from socalhhr, radio faceplate, antenna plug adapter, stubby antenna (I hated the RC look of the stock one), and stubby door locks (to fix the most annoying part of the car IMO). I have been a truck guy my entire life, mostly regular cabs, so my stereo system is designed around that. I already have my sub layout in the back planed (I will post pictures when its done), but am not sure where I want to mount my current door speakers. I haven't decided if it would be better to mount them in the front doors or the back doors until I get another set and a bigger amp. Anyway here is what is going into my HHR and what was in my colorado and 2 full size regular cab trucks.
1 set of Focal 165HC 6.5" speakers for the doors (need another set for the back, im hoping the door speakers are 6.5" in the hhrs, I haven't looked that up yet).
For right now, these will be powered by a zapco reference 150 amp, after I get another set of focals I will have to get a bigger amp, so this will power the tweets or some 4" speakers
For the bass, I have 2 Image Dynamics IDQ10d4 subs, these gave me great sound quality in my regular cab trucks.
Each of these subs are powered by its own planet audio pa2002 amp, when they was in my colorado each amp was pushing 380 watts to each sub.
The sides of the center console seem to be a great place to mount a couple 4" speakers, I haven't checked the tweeters yet, but they sound pretty good for stock. I belive if I lay my subs down and angle them towards the back glass I should be able to put the cargo tray in the top position and still have plenty of room to store stuff. Has anyone found a good acc+ towards the rear of the vehicle by any chance? Any suggestions for me?

Sounds like quite the set up you're going to be doing. Look forward to seeing pics when you're all done.
Only answer I can provide is size of door speakers. I asked this question myself before and was told they are 6 1/2".

Am I assuming you want power there for AMPS and the like?
Some of the people here have suggested tapping directly into the battery which is in the rear and using the the switch lead from your Head Unit to relay the power on the amps

Depth wise, how much room is there in the doors for the 6.5" speakers?
Edit: Just a quick update, I have a set of Focal Utopia speakers and tweeters coming for the front doors. I hope they can sound as good as everyone says.

I added some pictures of my subs and amps in the sub install sticky, but the install is not finished yet. The boxes are what I have used in my previous trucks, but I might end up building a couple of new boxes anyway. I just got in my new Focal Utopia speakers and am just waiting on some dynamat to come in to start installing them. I am looking at some 4 chanel kicker sx700 or sx900 amps to replace the planet audio amps, as well as some equalizers.
Here are the pictures that I posted in the other thread:
