Getting a 'Power Steering' message on the DIC. All the research I've found says the motor is the issue. Found an article on GM site saying 2006-2008 models are not under the recall but the motor has been given a lifetime warranty, which I confirmed by calling Chevrolet.

I have to wait to get the OK from the dealer to get the new part. I read a few comments saying to unplug the motor from the module or else it could ruin the module. If that's true, could I just go ahead and remove the motor since it's not doing anything anyway? Figured I could get a head start on the job while I wait for them to OK the part, but I still have to drive the vehicle.

 

It would not be safe to, the geometry makes it pretty unwieldy.

 

That's a good question. Since I haven't been exposed to this type of repair, I couldn't say for sure. Haven't had any 1st hand "look sees" at these to see how they physically bolt up under there.
I'll be checking back on this thread to see what the answer is.

 

Is the motor totally dead with no power assist at all? Usually it is an intermittent failure in which case I would leave it.

 

The motor works after turning the car off and then stops shortly after driving it. I was just afraid of ruining the module since I have to continue driving it 45 min each way to work. One suggestion was to just unplug the motor connectors and leave it installed.
