Check the rear bushing screw from the lower control arm. This reminds me to an issue that I had.

One thing to look at, its a long-shot at best, but check the calipers and pads. A caliper that is shifting on its mounts can give you a clunk, also the pads can make noise as they move fore and aft a bit under braking.

Plus, and this may sound dumb, but its from experience...check in the rear of your HHR and make sure the spare is tightly fastened down. I chased a "thump" in my '06 for a few days before the light bulb in my head went off and I checked the spare and its assorted hardware back there. Sure enough, it was loose.

Have you check the bolt that I refered on the post that I attached? I had EXACTLY the same issues as you had, and did the same as you (Struts, Strut Mounts, brake pads)...

My original guess was correct. Nut loose between the seat and steering wheel, though he'll never admit that!

In talking to him the replacement upper seat/bushing and bearing were not a correct fit, with play where the bearing seats in the stamping.

There was a concern about how the springs were wound at the ends (taper pitch) and not seating right, but evidently that was not the issue.

So..... capp is happy and remains low and slow!
