69,000 miles and synchros gone
HI all-
My Wife's HHR has a five-speed manual and, at 69000 miles, it's begun to have trouble with grinding going into second on up and downshifts and into first on downshifts.
No clutch problem that I can detect so I figure the trans needs 1st and 2nd gear synchros.
Has anyone else, here on the HHR net experienced synchronizer ring failure(s) at 65000-75000 miles?

I'm thinking a problem with the clutch slave cylinder or throw out bearing rather than the synchros in the transmission. I believe this is the same train of thought that Sleeper is having, if you're at a dead stop and it binds up going into first with the vehicle trying to lurch a bit, your clutch isn't disengaging fully causing the grinding you've described.

My last Chevy S-10 (1998) started to require just a tiny bit of effort to put in first gear at a dead stop, & when in 1st, I could feel it wanting to crawl very slightly..
Been there before..
It had no slave cylinder or master cylinder external leaks. But the slave was obviously wearing out & the fluid was by-passing (internally) & when released it would draw back into the reservior in the slave..
So it was an R&R dealio.. Of course the slave being inside the bellhousing (like hhr), tranny removal was necessary...
On that truck it wasn't a big deal to R&R it..
fwiw: I don't "think" it's synchros..

The problem is only with 1st and 2nd not the other four gears so that sort of rules out a clutch issue. If I had a clutch or clutch slave problem, I'd have hard shifting in all gears including reverse.
