True, but they also have a viscous coupling on the transfer case that helps split off the power to all four wheels and take the driveline shock out of the system.

GM had a system set up like this on the old Pontiac 6000 STE AWD. I think it was used with the old 3-speed transmission, though. Nowhere near the power, only about 160-170 HP out of that old Gen I 3.8. They also used an S-Blazer front axle in the rear of the car.
