Your junkyard stereo may be just fine, you will need to get a Tech2 scanner then time to play with it to make it work with the computer in your car, unless your local Chevy dealer has a technician who knows how to do the job. Mine did not. GM told me that many of their vehicles have the same radio in them and should work.

My daughter has a 2013 Malibu. The stereo looks the same but it does have the USB port in it. When her stereo quit working she took my spare HHR radio and got it installed in her car until she got another with the USB port in it.

I bought an FM transmitter adaptor that plugs into the cigarette lighter so it is unnecessary for me to have a USB port I guess.

 

You will need the vin of the donor HHR in the wrecking yard to get it to work in your HHR

 

UPDATE:

My radio works fine. The problem was with the door speakers.

I was going to install an aftermarket audio system and I started swapping the speakers.

Beginning at the front passenger door, I installed a Boston Acoustics 5x7 speaker. As soon as I did this, BOTH passenger side door speakers began working. I suspect those speakers share a common wire with the radio. Meaning, if one speaker quits working, both of them will produce no sound.............I then installed another 5x7 speaker in the rear door.

The drivers side was a different story. I replaced both speakers on that side of the car with 5x7 speakers, BUT still had no sound after the installation. Spending some time trying to figure it out, getting frustrated, I slam the door shut (like a childish idiot) and the damn speakers began working.........turned out that the speaker wires inside the rubber conduit tube were dameged. The rubber conduit tube, I don't know what it's called, but it's the rubber passage way where all the door wires pass from the door into the door jamb.

 

Wrong.

 

Well you got it repaired, now for maybe correct size speakers.

 

No, I'm gonna leave the 5x7 speakers in the doors. They fit well with minimal modification. I bought and installed baffles behind the speakers, the baffles are water resistant and supposedly improve sound quality of the speakers. They do infact have cleaner sound than the stock speakers......but some of the lower bass sound has been lost due to different speaker design.

I bought a small 8 inch subwoofer and am going to be installing it as soon as I can find a compact enclosure for it.

 

Why not install the sub woofer in the spot made for just that purpose?
