exposed insulation?

When you open the front doors and look at the fender through where the door is hinged, can everyone see this grey/brown insulation/soundproofing material? When I washed the HHR last I was surprised to notice it and see that it can and does get wet. Never noticed this with any other vehicle.

Next time I rotate my tires I'm going to pull the inner lining on the front wheels to see what's behind that insulation.

GM has been using this type of heat/noise insulation for many years.

This is part of why the HHR rides so quiet.

I had the same thing on my '57 Chevy.

I'd be willing to guess they have even improved it over the years!

Figured that's what it was. I was just surprised it is potentially exposed to weather, not that very much will get at it through the gap between the door and the fender. I would have just expected that it would be covered in some way.
