Look at an extended warranty as paying in advance for repairs you hope that you don't need.

At 160k, you're dealing with wear and tear repairs with the possible prospect of a catastrophic failure at some unspecified future mileage.

Instead of buying a warranty/service plan, grab an envelope then label it "HHR Maintainence". Stick some spare cash in it every month and you'll have you own "oh crap!" coverage, with no deductibles and no fine print waiting to trip you up.

at 160,000 miles, the first time you use that extended policy, it has payed for itself...check on the cost of replacing the air conditioning compressor...S C

At 160K you may not even be able to aquire an extended warranty. But if you can find one that will work for that high of milage be sure to see what is covered.

Ripoff Report also seems to be created by people with axes to grind, and every warranty company is eventually going to deny someone's claim, so they're all going to end up on this list eventually. I'd recommend going to your local Better Business Bureau website and looking for registered warranty companies.. OR, check the company that you're considering with the BBB and see what they have for a rating.
I have one on my car (thru a Canadian provider, sorry) and although I've never had to use it, the peace of mind is worth something, because making that payment every month is stress enough for those of us who do, I think!

All insurance is a gamble against yourself. That's the actuaries job, to figure the odds against paying claims.

It is a rip-off, unless you ever need it. Will you ever need it? The odds are no, that is how the company makes incredible amounts of money.

At 160k, I don't think anyone is going to give you a warranty anyway.

I bought an extended warranty once and it was excellent! I bought it though AAA and it was a little different than most. Lot's of warranties list "what it covers", but there is all kinds of fine print and exceptions. AAA's warranty just listed what it didn't cover, so it was easy to see the truth.

I don't think they offer those anymore though. I was probably to good of a deal for them to keep it going.
