Question First “major” problem - rear window defogger

My 2008 2LT’s rear window defogger isn’t working. The light on the button comes on but no defogging.

I checked the “fuse” and it is unlike anything I’ve seen before. It “looked” ok but I’m not sure.

Anyone else had a problem? None of the rear window lines are cut/chipped/abused... I can live without it but am kinda sad that it stopped working.

Any tips or experience would be helpful. It was probably used no less than a dozen times since new.

I'd try replacing the fuse if its at all suspect. The problem might lie in the wiring going into the hatch, maybe a break from repeated flexing.

I’m not sure if you’ve seen the fuse, on my car it’s #22 under the hood and it looks about half the size of a relay and doesn’t look like a “normal” full size blade fuse.

It has a clear area on it were you can see the wire and it appears to be as good as the others next to it in the box but I suppose I may as well replace it first as rule of thumb.

My 2008 has 53,000 miles on it, and I don’t think I use the tailgate any more often than most people, I’d be disappointed if it is wiring.

I suppose it is in the flex rubber, maybe I’ll poke in there too. I hate the idea of something on my Red Sled not working properly as it has been a really really good car for me.

Thanks for the input.

Could be an issue with the connectors to the defroster grid itself. Would have to take the inside hatch trim to check it. I have seen other cars (non hhr) where the connector vibrates off from hard closings, and even "soldered on" connectors come off the grid due to cold made solder joints.

Rear window solution

The contact point on the right side of the rear window came loose on mine and has to be reattached. All the issues you stated are present on mine as well.

According to the 2008 Owners manual the fuse is #2 in the block under the hood, not #22(air conditioning).

If it is #2 on your car, swap it with one of the others (same part number /specs of course) to see if it works. Maybe the #1 - power steering?
