You’re on track, you must remove the valve cover to inspect the timing chain, just 10 mm and 13 mm bolts and a pvc hose.

The starter and Bendix don't have anything to do after the engine is running. You can check if it is engaging by looking at the serpentine belt while cranking the engine. That might cause further damage.
You could do a compression check without looking at the chain but that might do further damage.
Dying on the highway then cranking and not starting is pretty much the definition of a broken chain. The only other thing is something just up an fell off under the hood, pretty long odds.

New chain with nothing else 5 hours labor, parts, including guides and tensioner from $125 - $250 (depends on source and markup). Many shops markup 100% over wholesale for parts some do 100% over retail. GM MSRP (what a GM shop would charge for parts) is about $275.
I would guesstimate $700 - $800.
Most states require a written estimate with limited overruns and return of old parts, I suggest looking at the estimate and asking questions.

And learn how to check your own oil. It does not involve any magic or special tools, just a rag or paper towel.

Angiekay,
You would be suprised by the amount if people that come here don't have a clue of how to check their oil level.
As members of this site we have to cover ALL the basics of automobile maintanance.
We do not assume what is known or unknownby the OP.
If you have noticed the administrators will always ask for the CEL code numbers, yet are constantly given a"this is what the code says".
Our knowledge is that there are many reasons for any given code number.
There is and never will be disrespect to any other site surfer here.
We love these little 'trucklets' and want to continue to see them on the road.

It's best not to wait until you have a problem to check it.

Many schools of thought on oil level checks , once a week, every fill up, nothing in the driveway! It must be ok! Shouldn’t it! Not if’n it’s burning off in the combustion chamber. That sort of thing. So we ask questions and do not assume anyone knows anything.
And don’t forget people read these threads, see some information and that how they learn about their HHR’s

Geez! Didn't expect that.
When someone says "no, I don't check my oil, I have it serviced" I assume that means "I am proud to say I only know how to fill the gas tank". I have heard that too many times to count.
Personally, I don't trust anyone to check anything that needs regular checking. They don't know what it looked like the last time.
