Highest Mile HHR
Before I made some management changes at my store in Northern Pennsylvania(fired some folks, put the fear of God into some others), I was ringing up 2,900 miles a week on Paddy during the Summer of 2010. It got to the point where the folks at the Cracker Barrel and BP station in Harrisonburg VA knew me by name. I have no doubts that with proper care and feeding, an HHR wouldn't make 500,000 to 750,000 miles before needing an overhaul.
I wonder how long a stock clutch can last in an HHR if driven responsibly.
That sort of mileage really makes me happy. I remember when my father would always say, "100,000 miles, time to get rid of it..." I never understood simply throwing your money down the toilet like that. Big whoop-shes old, hundred thousand miles on the clock, but how is that so much different than 90,000?. It may need the trans rebuilt at 120,000mi for whatever reason, the intake gasket may have went, waterpump, etc...
In the grand scheme of things, what's a couple hundred dollars in repairs... hell, even a thousand-when compared to a car payment? If you kept putting aside what your car payment would have cost you for a year even AFTER your car was paid off, you would have plenty of money to make whatever repair you could need for the life of the vehicle.
I hope to keep Betty for as long as actually possible. I'm more than savvy with a wrench so I know I could keep it going on my own once the warranty is long gone.
When does a well cared for car ACTUALLY die? One reason I allowed myself to purchase a new car was so that I could be there from beginning to end and see for myself. Maybe rust would take it out... who knows? I always spray underneath and wipe my door jambs and weather stripping. Eventually I will get pockets of rust here and there but so long as it isn't absolutely structural, she should be fine.
I take the best care that I can of my vehicles. I expect them to at least do the same for me.
