Bob Lutz pointed out to GM that people needs in a car can be met with any 2 year old used car. That is why it is important to make new cars that people want and have to have or they will just buy used. You have to feed the want not the need with a new car.
I buy new but I keep em 10 years and sell them for top dollar and I keep them in very good shape. My last SSEI I had a guy fly in from Florida to buy it with over a 100.000 miles. I still sold it for almost $12,000.
I thought he was nuts but he wanted a clean one so bad he flew in to buy it.
My 97 Sonoma lasted 4 hours till the guy who bought it came by. He did not even try to get me down on price.

I've been looking for a used car for my daughter, and I started by looking for HHRs. But since the HHR has only been around since 2006, I can't get a real cheap one. There are some priced right around the $10K range, but I wanted something <$6K. If you figure someone paid $18K for a base model in 2006, and it is now 5 years old and has 80-100K miles, and it is worth around $8K in trade, that isn't too bad of a deal.
In general, people are paying a good amount of money for economy cars on the used car market right now. Full size sedans and SUVs are not faring so well. I saw a lot of Exploders and Expuditions for pretty reasonable prices. Trucks, especially 4WD, seem to be keeping their value fairly well.
